Durham Fair PDF Print E-mail
Each year, every person’s entire range of senses is engaged by the many attractions of the fair.  This year will be no exception.

For many, the sounds of the Durham Fair are a big draw as there is a great headlining musical act each day.  On Friday, Country recording artist Blake Shelton will take the stage at 7:30 p.m.; rock band The Guess Who will perform at the same time on Saturday.

Country artist Phil Vassar will be the fair’s closing musical act on Sunday.
All of these artists are well-seasoned in the music industry and should deliver some great performances.

Interestingly, local country singer Veronica Ballestrini is scheduled to open for Blake Shelton on Friday night at 5:30.  The 16-year-old hails from Waterford and recently signed with a major country-music recording label.  After only around one year in the business, she has drawn comparisons with artists like Shania Twain and Carrie Underwood.

It should be great to see one of Connecticut’s rising stars perform at the fair on Friday night.

The hundreds of Competitive Exhibits at the fair are another great way for local kids and adults to showcase their own unique talents.

These exhibits take on a wide array of forms, and there really is something to interest everyone.  Individuals showcase photos, artwork, homemade food, and even livestock in exhibits throughout the Fair.

What makes this showcase special is that each person’s exhibit is truly his or her labor of love.  These folks spend the entire year preparing for the three-day fair and that dedication is evident in the quality of each exhibit.

Of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention the outstanding food available at the Durham Fair.  I am sure that I am right on the mark when I say that, for those who have been to the fair before, everyone has a favorite selection—if not several.

A person could attempt to sample every offering over the course of the three-day event and still run out of time.  There are dozens and dozens of vendors that offer unique cuisine and each creation is equally delectable.

From meat to vegetables and sweets to smoothies, there is something to satisfy every
fair-goer.

As you all well know, this is just a sampling of the unique attractions of the Durham Fair.  On top of what I just mentioned, the fair features traditional midway-style rides and games.   Writing about everything available to adults, children, and families would take me beyond the space allotted for this column.

Finally, we must also take into account another important feature of the fall season:  school athletics.  Our young people at the high school and middle school levels work hard each day at practice in order to represent their school in athletic competition.

The dedication of these kids combined with the crisp weather and scenery of autumn creates a compelling reason to get out and watch our young athletes.  I wish all of these athletes and their parents and coaches the best during this great time for sports.
