The town of Killingworth is populated by 5,010 people covering 36.0 sq. miles and is located in Middlesex County, South Central Connecticut that once included Clinton, on the shore of Long Island Sound, within its borders. It was first settled and named in 1667, although its purchase from the Mohegan Indians was not finalized until two years later. It was incorporated in 1703, and in 1730 a town meeting granted a petition for a Northern Society. The need for a division of the town became clear by the end of the century, but when the separation was made in 1838 it was this newer, Northern Society that retained the town name and records. Today its principal industries are agriculture and steel.
